Mary's first day of Chapel at Grace

Mary's Self Portrait, September 2007

Mary is absolutely beaming at Grace. She came into Chapel with her class this morning (9/11) all of the kindergartners’s in their uniforms, and promptly went to her row and sat down. Of course I was completely riveted by her interaction with her teacher and classmates so I was looking at her. She began looking for me, and when she saw me, we waved to each other, and she was very excited.

Reverend Eric started chapel and then we all sang, “Alleluia,” which Mary sings as she walks through the house. Reverend Eric read a book and talked about goodness, which is the theme for this month. Then one of the kids whose birthday is this week was called to the front and we said a birthday prayer over her. That’s probably when I started welling up. I had never heard or read the prayer before, but it seems to sum up what one ought to do for their child.

“Watch over your children, Lord, as their days increase; bless them and guide them wherever they may be. Strengthen them when they stand; comfort them when they are sad; raise them up if they fall; and be with them all the days of their lives. Amen.”

The other kindergarten class did a five finger prayer (this must be a protestant thing, because all of the other parents knew it), we did sign of the peace, more prayers and singing, and then we closed with “Alleluia.”

By the time we closed, I had to wipe away tears. I am not denying that being 37 weeks pregnant has something to do with my emotions running high. But mostly I think it’s that Grace strikes me as a very caring, very nurturing, very diverse place that is a perfect fit for a kid like Mary, and it makes me overwhelmingly happy that she is having such a good kindergarten experience so far.

From Dad: Update on Nora: She started school at ONS as well. She has taken to her friend Price very well. Last year, Mary would walk Nora to her classroom every morning. Now, Nora does that for Pricey.

Nora is growing into a very beautiful, very funny, very hippie kid. She likes flip flops for shoes. Long, flowery skirts. T shirts. She sleeps in the buff - and would do everything that way if we'd let her. There has been at least one Saturday where she didn't wear clothes all day!

Her sense of humor is much like Kitty'. she finds physical humor funny. She finds bodily noises funny. She finds pain for other people funny. She has a streak in her.

She is very excited about the baby. As is Mary. They both give the baby kisses constantly - that is kissing Kitty's belly. we are within 10 days of the due date. stay tuned for news here.
